About Us

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Farm Science Center) is a concept developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to serve as a primary link for farmers to access the latest agricultural technologies generated by the National Agricultural Research System (NARS). Agriculture and allied sectors play a significant role in India, with more than 54% of the population depending on them for their livelihood.

To enhance economic growth and facilitate the transfer of new technologies, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) serves as a resource unit for the agricultural sector in Phek District, Nagaland. Agriculture is the primary occupation in this region, involving 80.84% of the population. KVK operates at the grassroots level as a vocational training institution, helping bridge the gap between available agricultural technologies and their application in farming to increase production and productivity.

KVK in Phek District was established by ICAR under the aegis of NRC on Mithun, Jharnapani, Nagaland, in 2003. It is located in Porba village, Pfutsero subdivision, with the primary objective of reducing the time lag between technology generation and its transfer to farmers' fields, thereby ensuring increased production and sustainability.

Geographically, KVK Phek is situated between 94° 35’ 18” to 94° 38’ 09” E longitude and 25° 37’ 37” to 25° 39’ 47” N latitude. It is located approximately 8 km from Pfutsero subdivision and 50 km from Phek town. The district has an average altitude ranging between 1000 and 2500 meters above mean sea level (MSL) and falls under the Eastern Himalayan agro-climatic zone with a temperate climate.

The region consists of three major agro-climatic zones:

  1. Sub-Tropical Hill Zone (1000-1500m MSL)
  2. Sub-Alpine Temperate Zone (1500-3500m MSL)
  3. Mild Tropical Hill Zone (200-800m MSL)

The predominant crops in the region are rice, maize, beans, cabbage, and potato. Minor crops include foxtail millet, rice bean, and Job's tears. Besides that, kiwi is the One District One Product (ODOP) of the district, and farmers also grow persimmon, plum, peach, and passion fruit. The farming method in this region is terrace rice cultivation (TRC). Additionally, the area is known for Zabo farming, which falls under this region. The primary source of irrigation during the Kharif season is rainfall and springs. During the Rabi season, farmers mostly depend on springs. Other traditional practices include salt making in the Meluri area, weaving, bamboo and wood carving, and fruit juice production. KVK Phek is committed to empowering farmers with scientific knowledge and practical training to enhance agricultural productivity and economic sustainability in the region.
