ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Phek (ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema) under ICAR–ATARI, Zone VII, Umiam, successfully organized a Farmer’s Fair-cum-Kisan Gosthi on “Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development” at Phusachodu village in Phek district on March 24, 2026 in collaboration with ICAR–VPKAS, Almora. In this programme around 300 farmers from different villages were participated. The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Senior scientist and Head, KVK Phek, who highlighted key activities of KVK and encouraged value addition and post harvest processing and packaging in horticultural crops.
The chief guest, Shri Kudecho Khamo, Hon’ble Advisor on CAWD and Taxes, Government of Nagaland, stressed the importance of sustainable agriculture for food security and rural prosperity. He encouraged adoption of improved technologies, soil health management, and integration of livestock. He also highlighted opportunities in MSMEs and the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in agriculture, while appreciating the efforts of ICAR-KVK Phek in empowering farmers.
During the technical session, experts from ICAR-IVRI Research Station, Bengaluru, Dr. B.P. Srinivas Principal scientist and Dr. S.K. Bhure, Principal scientist delivered lectures. Dr. T. Esther Longkumer CTO (Soil Science) spoke on soil health management, while Dr. Hannah K. Asangla CTO (Agronomy) emphasized diversified farming for income generation. Mr. Manjunath K S, SMS (Horticulture) discussed improved cultivation practices of cool-season vegetables, and Dr. Ragulraj .S, STO, NRCM Porba highlighted small-scale poultry farming as a livelihood option.
An interactive session enabled farmers to address their queries with scientists. Vegetable seed kits developed by KVK were also distributed to farmers to promote improved agricultural practices. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly towards sustainable agricultural development and improved livelihoods in Phek district.
